Traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM for short, is an ancient form of healing developed by the Chinese. It has been practiced for more than 3,000 years, not only in China but also in many other Asian cultures. Recently, traditional Chinese medicine has started to experience popularity in western society as well. Although it is not practiced by most mainstream medical professionals, it is a thriving form of alternative or complementary medicine that many people have embraced.
However, in China, this form of medicine is in fact mainstream. It has been used to effectively treat patients suffering from a variety of ailments ranging from broken bones to depression, and a whole lot more as well. The foundation of practicing traditional Chinese medicine involves restoring the correct balance between a person’s yin and yang. These are the masculine and feminine elements that all people have, and any imbalance in these elements is believed to be the real reason why people suffer from diseases and other health conditions.
There are a number of approaches to traditional Chinese medicine that can be taken in order to treat diverse types of ailments. For example, massage and acupuncture are used for stimulating the body and to release energy that has thus far been blocked. In this way it helps to relax the mind and body and promotes a sense of overall well being.
A practice known as Qigong, which needs to be used on a daily basis, follows the basic principles of traditional Chinese medicine and helps to achieve better balance of the body and mind’s energy levels. Along with certain herbs it can treat many a different kind of ailment.
Many of the methods used in traditional Chinese medicine are very complex, although they each involve having to balance the energy levels within the human body. In fact, the view taken by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine is that the body must be treated holistically and not as a compilation of different parts that are looked at on an individual basis.
Though many western medical practitioners dismiss traditional Chinese medicine as being less than effective, in practice it has often been demonstrated that this form of medicine is truly effective and will provide relief in many instances.
